Parks in Need of Steel

After just hearing some of the big “New for 2013” coaster announcements, I took a quick look at some parks that I think are being neglected in terms of new steel coasters. Lets take a look at some parks that I think are desperate for new steel coasters;

Six Flags St. Louis

Face it, the park is dominated by wooden coasters, and don;t get me wrong, they’re great! But with the truth being that the park’s last steel coaster was a spinning coaster, and that the park’s best steel may very well be a Batman clone, this park is screaming for some new steel, (and no, a relocated boomerang doesn’t count!)

What STSL needs is a new, coaster with a bunch of inversions, (Chang would’ve done it,) and a mega or launch coaster. Plus, the park needs to beef up their line up to compete with Worlds of Fun, and Silver Dollar City, (especially with Outlaw Run.)

Kings Island

Although the park used to be Paramount’s flagship, since the Cedar Fair acquisition, the park hasn’t recieved a whole lot. Considering the fact that most other parks have each recieved 2 new coasters, and Kings Island has only gotten one, makes me think that Cedar Point has been the priority, and Kings Island has been left in the dust.

Truth be told, the park needs a coaster that no park should be without, a standard inverted coaster, (no, the Arrow Suspended coaster doesn’t count!)

California’s Great America

Yes, I know they’re getting a wooden coaster for 2013, but long term, this park has some tough competition, and needs some serious steel to make up for all those years of neglect.

Honestly, this park doesn’t have a lot of wiggle room on new coasters, because so many classes are covered by the park and SFDK. But I think a wing coaster would work here, or a mega, (if it can beat SKDK to the punch.)

When will Cedar Point Build a New Coaster?

New Coaster for 2013?

Cedar Point, previously marketed as “The Roller Coaster Capitol of the World” hasn’t built a new roller coaster since 2007, when the park opened Maverick, an Intamin LSM coaster. Since then, the park’s parent company Cedar Fair has made multiple investments at other parks and opened rides such as Behemoth, Diamondback, and Intimidator 305. However, Cedar Point, the company’s flagship park has suffered one of the longest coaster-less periods since Corkscrew made it’s debut at the park in 1975.

But, as Cedar Point has gone coaster-less for 5 seasons, the park’s main competitor Six Flags Magic Mountain has been quick to pounce, and has added 3 coasters in the past 3 seasons. In fact last year, they successfully claimed the title of having the most roller coasters in one park, with 18 coasters. But as soon as they claimed the title, they mysteriously removed Deja Vu from the park’s collection, and shipped it off to Six Flags New England. Rumors spread about the park adding a launch coaster similar to Maverick at the location of the now defunct Log Jammer, having the park reclaim the title, but they are just rumours. Currently the park’s total sits at 17, equal to that of Cedar Point.

Having gone coaster-less for so long, do you think the Cedar Point will make a comeback in 2013 and add a new coaster to its arsenal? Who knows, maybe the park will pull a “Magic Mountain” and add not one, but two coasters in one season to swiftly take the crown. But in the end, the question is still the same, will the park add a new coaster for 2013? Only time will tell.

Hurricane Harbor New Jersey to Add King Cobra Water Slide

Six Flags has already announced an immense amount of additions to their parks for the 2012 season, and even though that season is rapidly approaching, they are still announcing new attractions!!!! Today, it was announced that Six Flags Hurricane Harbor New Jersey will be building King Cobra, a water slide by Polin.

The bold orange, black and yellow scales of King Cobra do little to camouflage the thrills that await you. This unique configuration enables two tubes to race through a circular path with twists, turns and surprises through enclosed and open sections of the slide at speeds of over 30 mph.

King Cobra’s finale features a sudden, 25-foot plunge at a 50-degree angle with you racing to the finish as it appears you’re about to be swallowed by the mouth of this massive cobra.

New life for Kentucky Kingdom?

Since it’s closure in 2010, there have been few attempts to reopen to Kentucky Kingdom. However, familiar faces look to possibly pump new life into the park. The Koch family, already in ownership of the successful Holiday World, have expressed interest in adding the Kentucky park to their portfolio.

The Indiana family, released this statement on Monday Jan. 16th, “When Kentucky Kingdom closed, the Kochs expressed interest in learning more about options for the park’s future. The process is still in the fact-finding stage, and no decisions have been made whether to further pursue the opportunity.”

The Kentucky State Fair Board is desperate to re-open the park, but with most of it’s major rollercoasters removed, it will take some time, and cash to revive it.

Leviathan and Wonderland from Above

As construction proceeds, we can finally start to see what the whole ride will look like when it’s complete, and additionally how massive it is! And what better way to see the scale of things then from above! A friend of mine who owns a plane flew by Wonderland and got a photo of the park from the south. (It’s also in the gallery.) Plus, he also got a video while circling the park and let me say, because of the way it thwarts that corner of the park, the statement saying, “this is my park now,” is sort of true!

Also, if you zoom in on Leviathan, you really get a sense for how tall the camel-backs are on this ride. You can barely make out Dragon Fire, it looks tiny!
